Oreo Created A Limited-Time Snack That Pretzel Fans Will Love

When it comes to classic cookies, Oreos are one of the first that comes to mind. The twistable, dunkable snacks have been on the market for over 100 years and are the world's most frequently bought cookies. The company behind the sweets occasionally tries its hand at new and interesting takes on the traditional recipe, such as the discontinued Oreo with a jelly center. The latest such iteration of the classic treat is one that will combine sweet with savory for the first time in the cookie's history.

Beginning May 5, Oreo will be releasing Chocolate Covered Pretzel cookies. Instead of the characteristic creamy white filling, customers will be treated to chocolate-flavored creme as they twist apart the outer layers. The cookies on the outside will be pretzel-flavored and speckled with salt for a sweet and savory snacking experience new to Oreo lovers.

The company that produces Oreos, Mondelēz International, didn't just come up with the new recipe on the fly. It chose pretzels in particular because it discovered by researching snacking trends that folks are hungry for some textural contrast in their sweets.

Oreo's new recipe reflects customer feedback

When Mondelēz International revealed its sixth annual report on snacking trends across the globe, it showed that 81% of customers get enthusiastic about the sensory experience that their snacks bring to the table. That's not to say that traditional flavors aren't important, with 73% of people polled indicating they "couldn't imagine a world without chocolate." Hence, chocolate and pretzels combined into one supreme sweet, creating a flavor and texture combination similar to preexisting tricks like adding crunchy pretzels to a boxed cake mix.

Oreo fans excited to get their hands on the latest version of the classic cookie will want to act fast. After the initial release on May 5, the treats will only be available for a limited time and while supplies last. Like all the discontinued snacks from the 1990s that you probably forgot existed, they will almost certainly be gone before you know it, so Oreo lovers should plan on making a trip to the store to stock up once the new cookies hit the shelves.
