The McDonald's Ice Cream Sandwich Hack That Adds Savory To The Mix
Every now and then, we come across a viral food hack that really blows our minds — but not always in a good way. From the viral TikTok scrambled pancakes (which are nothing but stodgy, dense petals of gummy dough) to cheesy beef "dinner" boiled in a Doritos bag (yielding the visual analogue of day-old cat gack), sometimes FoodTok and its ilk confuse us. Stepping into the ring is a McDonald's hack that, unlike slathering Big Mac sauce on a Filet-O-Fish, may or may not be a terrible idea, depending on your feelings about combining potatoes and ice cream.
We caught wind of this creation on Instagram from a colorful post trumpeting the "McDonald's Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich," a spin on an ice cream sandwich that could only have come from a very active imagination. Basically, it's a McDonald's ice cream product of your choosing (the example here showed an Oreo McFlurry) layered between two hash browns. We love dipping our fries in a chocolate Frosty at Wendy's, so perhaps the idea has some merit.
The hash brown ice cream sandwich has people talking
The internet has been flirting with the hash brown "hack" for awhile, with varying results. "Not worth the hype," said one blogger who faithfully sampled the combo with all available McFlurry varieties. The TODAY show covered the story with anchors being served a tray of the concoctions — but one flat-out refused to try it. On the other hand, Reddit was much more open-minded. "Ngl that looks good af," one commenter typed. A Facebook video of the controversial sandwich also merited some approving comments: "Salty, sweet, crunchy, creamy, cold, hot, greasy. How could you go wrong?"
Regardless of how you personally feel, there are some logistical problems here. McDonald's stopped serving all-day breakfast a few years ago, meaning that hash browns are currently only available in the morning. Accordingly, you can only make a hash brown ice cream sandwich before 10:30 a.m. or, if you are lucky, 11 a.m. Then, there's the price tag. The internet has been complaining for a while about McDonald's hash browns getting pricey, and you need two of them to make the sandwich. If you opt for a McFlurry, you are easily looking at a Franken-dessert that pushes the $10 mark. Still, if you have time in the late morning, a few extra bucks to burn, and a cast-iron stomach lining, this viral sensation might be just the snack you've been dreaming of.
