This Kitchen Gadget Is Your Secret Weapon For Storing Cake Pops

As a great non-cake use for boxed cake mix, cake pops are one of the most irresistible bite-sized treats out there. When the urge to make your own cake pops strikes, you can count on us for expert advice on how to store your culinary creations. We recently had a chance to talk to Sandy Folsom, an internationally known cake decorator and School Director at the Wilton Sweet Studio. She shared her secret weapon for storing cake pops in the kitchen, namely that you should be mindful of temperature and time. According to Folsom, "We recommend everyone store their decorated cake pops in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place and enjoy them within a week."

The real MVP of cake pop storage is a chilly kitchen stalwart. However, you will need to plan ahead a bit, as Folsom's advice is to store mostly pre-made cake pops in the freezer — without sticks or icing. If you've got them in an airtight container to protect against unwanted odors or freezer burn, they should last in the appliance for up to six weeks. "You'll want to store cake pops without their sticks in a large freezer bag, or even better a vacuum sealed bag that's placed inside a container to avoid accidental smushing," she said. "Let them come to room temperature before decorating."

Decorate and serve

Whether you are baking and decorating the cake pops on the same day or digging into frozen cake pops set aside until the time is right, a little extra attention to ingredients can go a long way. "To get smooth, polished looking cake pops we recommend using Candy Melts to create your outer coating instead of traditional icing," Folsom explains. These ingredients have a similar consistency to chocolate and don't need to be tempered to melt; still, if your Candy Melts are coming out thicker than anticipated, you can use coconut oil to thin the mix out.

Once decorated and ready to serve, there are many ways to present your cake pops. Folsom explains that though a treat stand is perfect for letting your delectable desserts take center stage, you can also seal your cake pops in individual treat bags with a ribbon. Beyond these tools, "You can also steal a trick from master gum paste flower creators and use craft styrofoam or a cardboard box to hold your cake pops," she explains. "Cover the base with fabric or wrapping paper in coordinating colors for a polished look."
