If You've Shopped At Aldi Recently, Check Your Fridge For This Recalled Cheese

Only three months into the year, there has already been a slate of food recalls across the country (which may not strictly be a bad thing). The latest has been issued concerning Aldi's Happy Farms Colby Jack shredded cheese. Late last year, Aldi issued another recall of cheese due to possible listeria contamination. This time around, the reason behind the retraction is that stainless steel fragments have been found inside a bag. Initially voluntarily recalled on February 15, 2025, the withdrawal of the shredded cheese has been updated to a Class II recall as of March 19.

The cheese in question, produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., was distributed to stores in four states: Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Ohio. While the cheese is no longer sold at Aldi, you may have some stashed away in the fridge or the freezer if you regularly shop at the discount grocery chain. It is well worth taking a peek inside to ensure you don't see a batch number of 8679653 and a UPC code of 4061463330840. The packaging also bears the item number 170374 and has a best-by date of either July 13, 2025, or July 14, 2025.

The risks of physical contaminants in food

Roughly a year ago, Trader Joe's Chicken Soup Dumplings were recalled because of a physical contaminant as well. In that instance, a plastic marker had found its way into the product. In much the same way that bits of plastic could cause harm, stainless steel fragments in food could provoke choking and dental problems. The 12-ounce bags of Colby Jack shredded cheese are the only type being recalled, so any other products coming out of the Great Lakes Cheese Co. should be safe to consume.

Aldi's cheese recall being raised to a Class II means that it could lead to temporary health problems. Although it's not as serious as a Class I recall — that level means something may cause serious medical problems or death — it is still worth double-checking your cool storage areas for this particular shredded cheese. If found, you should be able to return it to Aldi for a refund. Otherwise, be sure to toss it into the trash for safety's sake.
