The Popular Mississippi Seafood Restaurant That Started As A Humble Food Stand
To many, McElroy's Harbor House in Biloxi, Mississippi is nothing short of an institution. Diners can feast on fresh raw oysters or a shrimp po'boy, among many other options, all while enjoying a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. It can be hard to believe this popular, bustling restaurant had such humble beginnings.
James and Emerick McElroy started the establishment as a small but busy A&W root beer stand in 1957. Then, in 1969, Hurricane Camille devastated the area. When nearby property owners rebuilt, they added a snack bar to one of the city's harbors. The McElroys purchased that snack bar in 1972.
By 1974, the torch had passed to the McElroys' son, Mickey, and their daughter-in-law, Jane, who opened a seafood spot they named McElroy's Harbor House. Their maritime-themed eatery offered customers a chance to sample the freshest catches Mississippi's Gulf Coast had to offer. Yet, in 2005, another major hurricane would dramatically alter the fate of the restaurant.
In Katrina's path
Running a business located on the Gulf of Mexico isn't without its risks, a point that became all too clear when Hurricane Katrina roared into Biloxi in 2005. When Katrina hit, the restaurant was so damaged that it took until 2012 for the establishment to navigate insurance and financing issues and re-open. However, the McElroys built what they believed was an even better establishment with an elevated structure and a much better view of the waterfront and nearby Deer Island from 29 feet above the Gulf. This move also complied with FEMA guidelines for flood safety. An elevator also increased accessibility for all customers.
In 2024, McElroy's Harbor House celebrated its 50th anniversary. It continues to serve customers fresh-caught seafood and has the distinction of being one of the oldest seafood restaurants on the Gulf Coast. Step inside, and you'll see that the elevated view is just the beginning.
