Costco's Maple Syrup Jugs Have A Major Design Flaw

Most popular pancake syrup brands are missing a key ingredient that makes maple syrup authentic, but Costco's Kirkland Signature brand is the real deal. Yet, it isn't without its controversy. While the sweet nectar doesn't see many complaints aimed its way, some proclaim the container harbors a design flaw that can spoil an otherwise enjoyable breakfast experience.

In the subreddit r/Costco, it was brought to some people's attention that Kirkland's maple syrup jar is manufactured with an allegedly problematic lid. Apparently, the cap doesn't seal flush with the top of the container, allowing expensive maple syrup to leak out and create a sticky mess. "Constantly crusty, always getting it down the side of the bottle, never wants to stay closed," one commenter lamented. Another succinctly remarked, "That cap is the epitome of awful!"

However, some argued that the cap on Costco's maple syrup is not a design flaw at all. One user wrote, "I actually like the flip top compared to the threaded tops on the glass bottles." A few folks pointed out that wiping the cap off between uses would easily remedy the problem, while others cheekily suggested that simply licking off any remaining syrup drippings was a quick fix (we can't strictly recommend this trick). Still, some people were having none of that. Between complaints and defenses of the controversial packaging, one commenter astutely pointed out a real solution for those who have trouble keeping their caps clean.

A quick fix for Costco's maple syrup shortcomings

Amidst the slanderous complaints against Costco's maple syrup packaging and people coming to its defense, one commenter on r/Costco seemed to understand what folks were discussing and sympathized. They, too, had struggled with the leaky lid, but instead of taking to a message board to air their grievances, they found a simple solution. Upon taking a closer look at how the syrup was able to sneak past what should be an impenetrable barrier, they noticed that when the tamper-proof seal under the cap was removed, it created extra space around the lid, allowing the precious nectar within to escape confinement.

After discovering the problem, they came up with a clever workaround. "When removing the tamper seal use a sharp knife and run it around the inside of the bottle opening, leaving the rim of the seal intact and your cap should line up properly!" Unfortunately, while this solution was embraced by one user, it was largely ignored by others. Although no one indicated they thought the maple syrup was a Costco product to avoid, the ire spawned by what some consider a deplorable design could not be quelled with a reasonable idea for making the best out of a sticky situation.
