The Minnesota Deli That's Famous For Its House-Made Sausages

If you've ever had a hankering for a hearty bowl of borscht, a house-made sausage, or a comforting plate of pierogies, you probably grew up in a Polish household. Or you live in Minneapolis, home to the famous Kramarczuk's deli (and which is one of Anthony Bourdain's favorite unexpected foodie cities). An institution in its own right, this Minnesota market and restaurant is a hub for traditional Eastern European fare.

For over 60 years, Kramarczuk's has been filling the northeast neighborhood of Minneapolis with the smell of fresh baked bread, craveable smoked sausage, and savory stewed cabbage. It's all thanks to Wasyl Kramarczuk and his wife Anna, who traveled as refugees from Ukraine to the United States back in the 1940s. Wasyl brought over his skill in crafting sausages, while Anna was a superior baker and cook. With their combined forces and plenty of hard work, they turned their namesake restaurant into a Minneapolis institution that's still owned by family members. Though the business has moved from its original spot, it's been at the current location since 1967.

Kolaches, kielbasas, and more

Whether you live near Kramarczuk's (lucky you!) or are paying a visit to Minneapolis, this iconic deli and restaurant needs to be on your list. In 2013, Kramarczuk's won the America's Classic award from the James Beard Foundation. With one just visit, you'll understand why. Opening the door to this institution welcomes you to a bustling meat counter with house-made sausages, brats, wieners, and more. Its from-scratch bakery and kitchen boasts famous treats like kolaches, cream puffs, cheesecakes, and strudels.

Diners can expect to get their money's worth when they come here. With large portions and reasonable prices, you can order classic cabbage rolls, pierogies, homemade soups, kielbasa, and made-to-order sandwiches. One thing you can find in common whether you're dining in, taking out, everything here is made from scratch and with long-held, authentic recipes.
