Here's How Long Coconut Water Lasts After Opening

Whether you've opened a carton or bravely opened a full coconut without sending yourself to the E.R., the shelf life of a container of coconut water depends on the type (fresh or store bought) and how it was stored. If you're fortunate to have fresh coconut water, the limit is 3 to 5 days. Packaged coconut water should be good for another two days.

However, please note that this refreshing tropical liquid can go bad. Conditions that lead to spoilage are dependent upon the temperature (including swings in temperature), exposure to air, and any additives that may or may not be present in the fluid. If your water is fresh, it could spoil much faster than the type on your grocer shelf because it may lack preservatives — check your label to see whether or not they're inside.

Once you open the container, store it at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the fridge, ideally in an airtight container (this can be as simple as replacing the cap). To minimize the growth of bacteria, keep coconut water in a vacuum-sealed container in the back of the refrigerator. The temperature is more consistent there, while spaces closer to the front or in the fridge door experienced the widest changes in temperature.

How to tell when coconut water has gone bad

If you want to further extend the shelf life of your opened coconut water, consider freezing it. Simply pour the leftovers into ice cube trays and allow it to freeze solid. These cubes can add a little chilly coconut zing to your favorite beverage, including perhaps a tropical cocktail made with your favorite tequila brand.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and that includes your opened container of coconut water. If you're ever unsure, pay close attention to what your sense are telling you. There are four definite signs that your coconut water should be tossed out. How does it smell? Fresh coconut water should have a clean, slightly sweet aroma. If it smells at all sour or otherwise weird, be safe and throw it away. Normally, coconut water can be a little cloudy (especially if it contains pulp) or simply clear. If it changes color or has strange morsels floating around in it, go ahead and discard it. Finally, does it taste really sour or just off? Yes, you guessed correctly: it's time to toss the water.
