Igloo Just Recalled More Than A Million Coolers Over Severe Risks
It's a dangerous moment in time for portable food storage! Just a couple short months after viral drinkware brand Stanley recalled over three million mugs due to faulty lids that could cause burns, Igloo announced a recall on more than a million coolers with toppers that have caused severe finger and hand injuries. Igloo, based in Katy, Texas, is warning consumers to stop using its 90-quart Flip & Tow rolling coolers because the tow handle is defective and has the potential to crush, lacerate, or even sever fingers. A dozen such injuries have already been reported.
Unlike food recalls similar to the current recall affecting canned tuna sold at major grocery stores, you probably don't think much about the safety of your coolers, and certainly not after you buy them. Coolers, as opposed to food, don't necessarily go bad or have a fussy shelf life. Still, that rolling Igloo in your basement or shed, just waiting for the weather to turn warm again for picnics and keeping ice cream frozen on beach trips, may require your immediate attention.
How to know if your cooler is affected
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a list of the SKUs and date codes affected by the cooler recall. Glancing at the list, more than 50 unique labels and configurations of 90-quart coolers, including the Maxcool, Latitude, and Sportsman varieties, should be considered dangerous. The units were sold between January 2019 and January 2025 at major retailers like Costco, Target, Dick's, and Amazon. All colors of the impacted SKUs are recalled. Keep in mind that Igloo has been in the cooler business for almost 80 years and sells a wide range of cooler products, including hard and soft-sided varieties, Playmates lunchboxes, and even electric coolers. Only the products on the recall list should be taken out of commission.
If you have an Igloo cooler that falls under the recall, stop using it immediately and contact Igloo so it can send you a free replacement handle. The company can be called at 888-943-5182, emailed at igloo90qt@sedgwick.com, or contacted on the recall website tailor-made to handle these claims.
