The Discontinued Ben & Jerry's Flavor That Had A Hint Of Booze

Over the years, ice cream giant Ben & Jerry's has released many unique and standard flavors. Some basics, like vanilla, have been on the menu since the beginning, while other flavors spent very little time in circulation. But while one boozy flavor made quite a mark, it's no longer found in the brand's ice cream lineup.

From Russia with Buzz — that would a riff on the title of 1963 James Bond movie "From Russia with Love" — was the name of this particular Ben & Jerry's ice cream, which was flavored like a White Russian cocktail. The base consisted of two kinds of coffee-flavored ice cream combined with espresso chocolate chips. The addition of coffee liqueur gave this treat its boozy edge.

White Russian cocktails are typically made with cream, vodka, and a coffee-flavored liqueur like Kahlua. They are meant to be served over ice, which may be why the flavors worked so well in the Ben & Jerry's frozen confection. In fact, as both the brand and its fans have pointed out, many of its ice creams can be used to make delicious frosty cocktails.

Visiting the Flavor Graveyard

From Russia with Buzz wasn't the only Ben & Jerry's ice cream with familiar alcohol flavors. Whiskey Biz includes brown butter bourbon caramel and whiskey caramel swirls, along with white chocolate (bourbon and white chocolate are a perfect pairing) and Dublin Mudslide (another retired variety) go its flavor from Irish Cream liqueur. These elevated liquored-up frozen variations sure aren't your grandma's rum raisin ice cream.

The company never explained whether the buzz in the ice cream's name was from the caffeine in the coffee or the alcohol in the liqueur, but odds are it was more the former than the latter. Ben & Jerry's currently offer another flavor, Coffee Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz, that contains no alcohol. The buzz comes from caffeine, so maybe it was the coffee after all.

Ben & Jerry's has a spot at its Waterbury, Vermont factory dedicated to discontinued flavors. Called The Flavor Graveyard, fans can take a turn there and pay their respects to bygone flavors such as Wavy Gravy and Holy Cannoli. On occasion, a flavor will be resurrected from the grave and will show up back in your store's freezer case. While we may have given up on Klondike bringing back Choco Tacos, we are holding out hope for From Russia with Buzz.
