Costco's New Chicken And Bacon Sandwich Is Already Unpopular

Costco's wildly popular hot dog and soda combo for $1.50 is reason in itself for many to make a trip to the membership warehouse, but a recent addition to the food court menu is not receiving the same adoration. A look at the new chicken bacon sandwich from an Instagram reel doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary: oven-roasted chicken, cheddar cheese, and a blended mustard and mayo spread. But instead of crispy slices of bacon, this sandwich features a sweet and savory bacon jam that seems uninspiring to many.

The sandwich is reportedly served cold, which hasn't done much to breed enthusiasm for the new sandwich. According to a post about the sandwich on the r/Costco subreddit, folks are likewise not impressed with the bulky ciabatta bun holding the dish together, with one person commenting, "Too much bread," and another saying, "Costco, if you're listening, please stop with the ciabatta bread." Others complained that the mustard-mayo blend was lackluster, with some commenters pleading for a distinguishing sauce to tie the ingredients in the sandwich together. The price of $6.99 for the cold sandwich also isn't helping to build any excitement around Costco's latest creation.

People want Costco's discontinued items back

When people talk about Costco food court items, the discussion often descends into a lamentation of discontinued foods that many wish would come back. The discontinued Polish dog probably isn't ever coming back, and the $4 chicken Caesar salads disappearing was a blow to those who enjoyed an affordable salad option at Costco. However, there are other discontinued items that customers can't help but reminisce over after seeing the latest chicken bacon sandwich debut.

The Combo Pizza is often mentioned as something that Costco should bring back instead of coming out with new sandwiches. Basically a supreme pizza, it was a fan favorite until it quietly left the menu in 2020. Some commenters also highlighted the fact that Costco's current pizza offerings cost only $10 a pie — a much better deal than buying it by the slice —  which makes the $7 chicken sandwich seem like a steep price for something served cold.

Others wondered why the retailer would introduce this new sandwich while ignoring the pleas of longtime Costco fans to bring back the hot turkey and provolone sandwich. This sandwich was discontinued in 2020, and admirers have never relented in letting the membership warehouse know that they want it back. This newest addition to the food court seems to have drudged up the still brewing resentment about its disappearance, with some folks wishing they had a local store like the ones they see in other countries.

Costcos in other parts of the world make Americans jealous

One of the commenters from the r/Costco subreddit was obviously appalled by the retailer's recent food court addition, writing, "Stop with the sandwiches already. It drives me crazy because I see so much amazing food in pictures of Costco food courts around the world." In the United States, Costco features cuisine that suits the American palate, like hot dogs and pizza, but the big box store has locations in France, Spain, South Korea, and several other countries. In general, the food courts tend to cater to regional tastes.

In Canada, Costco serves poutine, and in Taiwan, the food court offers clam chowder. Understanding this, some commenters on Reddit couldn't support adding another hum-drum sandwich to the menu instead of something more exciting. While its recent new Orange Dreamsicle Cheesecake dessert was well-received, the future isn't looking bright for Costco's chicken bacon sandwich.
